From parking to innovating

A look at mobility

Strijp‑S is in flux every day. Literally and figuratively. And Mobility‑S is the organisation that coordinates mobility in the area. That is quite a challenge, because everyone wants to be able to park anywhere for instance, but nobody likes paying for parking. While mobility is so much more than parking. Mobility‑S ensures that the area remains accessible for residents and visitors thanks to the innovative facilities Strijp‑S has to offer as a ‘living lab’. After a careful trial period, it is now time for action. An update by Paul Bloemen from Mobility‑S.

Smart mobility

“Mobility‑S is the name of the programme and at the same time the company that is responsible for the public parking of cars and bicycles at Strijp‑S. Our company continuously invests in innovation in the field of mobility. The combination of sustainability and ‘smart mobility’ is an important principle here. Actually just as with energy. You look for alternatives. We want to stimulate people to look at mobility differently. It’s logical that the pressure on parking is increasing due to the growth of the area and due to new houses being built. To respond to this, the construction of a second multi‑storey car park is already underway.

But there is more. Besides taking care of parking, the right routing and signing, Mobility‑S is mainly also a party that wants to stimulate alternative mobility. The basic idea is that we try to limit the number of cars in the area as much as possible. Not by discouraging, but mainly by offering alternatives. Examples include optimum use of existing parking spaces; by companies during the day and mainly by residents at night. For events we will structurally use parking spaces in the surrounding area, at the PSV stadium parking facility for instance.

Deelfietsen, een goed alternatief voor de auto

Shared bikes, a good alternative for the car

Shared bikes

The shared bikes we recently introduced are a good alternative for the car. For short distances between Strijp‑S and the centre for instance, or the station, high‑tech campus or TU/e, etc. We’re going to offer two options for this in the near future. One is the so‑called ‘Hopper Point’ system. This works with different ‘docking stations’ in town, where you pick up and return your shared bike. They will be installed soon. You can pay on the spot or take out a subscription. In addition, there is the shared bike with a ‘smart lock’, which you open with your smartphone if you are authorized to do so. This doesn’t tie you down to fixed spots. You can follow where the bikes are. The shared bikes with regular locks are currently stationed at Postmasters in Strijp‑S, ready to ride.

Shared cars

In collaboration with BMW we’ll also start offering shared cars soon. BMW is making two electric i3 cars available for this purpose. In the future you will be able to pay for shared bikes and shared cars through the Mobility‑S website. You can create your own account as a staff member or resident, which you can use in the future to manage, reserve and pay for all the facilities used (parking, electric charging, shared bikes and more).

Beamrz

Finally, a Beamrz pilot will start in September 2016. This is a Streaming Mobility Platform through which you can request and offer a ride online directly (a trip). This is possible through ride sharing, car sharing and on demand. The ride can also be requested through public transport. Various forms of mobility come together at one counter, as it were.”
