Maximum attention for Strijp‑S

News

Amid great public interest and for the second time in one week, queen Maxima paid Strijp‑S a visit. After she had presented the Willem I award to Philips in the Radio Royaal restaurant on 26 May, she opened the first foreign branch of the Singularity University in the Apparaten‑fabriek on 2 June. A better link from technological present to future is difficult to imagine.

Singularity University is a prestigious institute in the United States (California) that wants to solve world problems through exponentially growing technologies like biotechnology and nanotechnology. This first European expansion of the think tank is housed on the ground floor of the Apparatenfabriek where the Trudo shop used to be.

The Dutch branch of the Singularity University at Strijp‑S is specifically aimed at four themes: water, agrifood, health and mobility. At the opening, two futuristic vehicles were parked outside: the Stella Lux, a solar‑powered family car and a car “propelled” by formic acid.

Singularity University brings people together across the world to jointly think up solutions to everyday problems. And technologically innovative companies from the region will be involved in this. In Eindhoven, the institute organises meetings to bring together start‑ups, researchers, companies and government to work on these solutions. The Strijp‑S branch also serves as an exhibition space for technology applications, so that everyone can see and experience the result of these innovations.

Of course, the opening ritual didn’t go quite according to plan. To Maxima’s amusement and that of the other people present, the drones that were to hold up the traditional ribbon landed too soon. “Until next week”, the queen jokingly said upon leaving. And indeed, a week later she paid an unexpected working visit to the Summa College in Eindhoven.
